Psalm 24 notes "The earth is eternal and the fullness therefore of". As Progressive Jews we follow the principle of Ba’al Taschit: "Do not destroy".
As we look for our winter coats and jumpers and imagine buying new ones, why not do more to protect our environment by buying pre-owned, recycled or charity shop clothing? Or try out the many new online opportunities for buying and selling clothes. See https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/apr/08/how-to-buy-secondhand-clothes-online-best-sites-uk. Recently there was a Fashion Extravaganza (complete with catwalk) where all of the amazing clothes were pre-owned, recycled from other clothes, or even made from duvet covers. The fast-fashion industry uses millions of litres of water that could be far better utilised by local communities. Britain is the highest fast-fashion user in Europe, so consider what you really need, and look out for those amazing bargains in your local charity shops and online.
